The Senior Citizens Association was established for the purpose of providing information, Gleaners Food Program, and services to all senior citizens (60+) of Missaukee County.

July 16 at noon: County picnic for seniors at Friends Ministry, 3728 S. Morey Rd.. 

Volunteers needed: Meals on Wheels
    Deliver meals to homebound seniors in the Lake City and Cadillac areas. Two hours one or more days per week, Monday - Friday. Substitute drivers needed, too. Reimbursement for mileage can be provided. Make a difference!

Needed: Inactive Cell Phones
As long as they are in working condition and include a battery charger, we will collect them and distribute them to senior citizens of Missaukee County to use as 911 phones. Drop them off at the Senior Citizens Building at 3728 S. Morey (in front of the Friends Ministry Building). For more information or to sign up to receive an emergency phone, call (231) 839-7554.

House number signs for seniors: the program, offered through Emergency Management and the Commission on Aging, is for seniors who are not in a financial position to purchase a sign from the Kiwanis. All 5 fire departments participate in the installation of signs. Call the COA or Dawn Mills.

    Pancake breakfast the 1st Sunday of every month from 8:00 am to noon.

BITS & PIECES
    Did you know that the Cadillac Social Security Office has moved this past year to a new location? In May, the office moved to 1729 S. Mitchell St. Office hours are 9:00 - 4:00 Monday through Thursday.
    Congregate Meals: Lake City--five days a week at Maple Grove Park. Merritt Golden Agers on Tuesdays and Thursdays. McBain Center on Thursday. Please call the center you wish to attend ahead of time for reservations, or call (231) 775-7532.

Dining Out
    Dining Out is a service of the Missaukee County Commission on Aging and the Area Agency on Aging of Northwest Michigan in cooperation with area restaurants -- Stony Pine Restaurant in McBain and Parkside Diner in Lake City.
    A donation for the meal is made when you pick up the meal certificate. A $2 donation per certificate is appreciated. The meals served shall meet the nutrition standards of the Senior Nutrition Program.
    Dining Out certificates are restricted to certain menu selections. This does not include tips, so please consider this when enjoying the services of the restaurants.
    This year, to expand program longevity, each client will be eligible for 4 vouchers each month. Vouchers may be obtained on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 2:00 - 4:00 pm at the Commission on Aging Office or from 11:30 - noon at the Senior Centers as follows:
        1st Tuesday at Moorestown
        2nd Thursday at McBain
        3rd Thursday at Merritt

Need Home Repairs?
    Is your home in need of costly repairs? Don't miss this affordable home repair program through Wexford, Missaukee, and Benzie Counties. The interest rates and payments are based on income. To qualify, you must own and have lived in your home at least one year, and you must have paid your taxes and home insurance.
    There is a maximum yearly income requirement. Call Northwest Michigan Human Services Agency for more information at 1-800-443-3397 or (231) 775-9781.

    The various services of friends Ministry not only offer temporary relief to people experiencing hard times, but also provide sustainable planning for the future:

The Thrift Store is now open Monday through Friday from 10:00 to 5:00, and Saturday from 10:00 to 2:00. The store is located in the back building of FRIENDS Ministry.     FRIENDS Ministry Calendar
        Monday:  Senior Dances 2nd Monday 7 -10 pm
        Tuesday: Computer class 1 - 4 by appointment. Call 839-4463 for more information. Line Dancing 6:30 - 8:30 pm.
        Wednesday: Gleaners Food Pantry (food for seniors) 9:00 - noon and 1:00 - 3:00 the 2nd Wednesday of each month.
        Thursday:  Senior Dances 2nd and 4th Thursday each month from 1:00 to 4:00. Donation at door.

Merritt Golden Agers
    The Merritt Golden Agers Senior Center is a self-supporting senior center. These seniors are very active!
    They have dances twice a week on Monday and Saturday evenings beginning at 7:00  and going until 10:00. Thet do ask for a small donation. The dances include square, round, polkas, and waltzes. They provide their own music with piano, guitars, accordian, dulcimers, and other non-electric instruments. All musicians are welcome to join us.
    And they love to eat. Senior Meals are provided on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please call ahead for reservations. Contact Frances Love at (231) 826-3790.
    a monthly pancake supper is held the 1st Monday after the 3rd of the month. The menu includes eggs, potatoes, sausage, pancakes, and homemade desserts.
    On the 3rd Monday of each month there is a birthday celebration with ice cream and birthday cake.
    As a money-making project, the center also weaves beautiful rugs that are for sale at very reasonable prices. The rugs can be made to order with the colors you wish, or there are completed rugs for sale.
    Once a month, the Merritt Golden Agers entertain residents with music and dancing at Autumnwood Nursing Home in McBain.

NOTICES
    The Historical Society is working on a new history book about Missaukee County families. If you have not yet sent in some family history with a picture or two, please send them to Lake City Historical Society, P.O. Box 93, Lake City, MI 49651.
    We have printed again this year a calendar with many old pictures of Missaukee County. It costs $5 and may be purchased at the Lake City Senior Center or Woodstock on Main Street. Since the photos are changed yearly, this always makes a great gift.
    The Log Cabin Museum is open from May to September, Sunday from 2:00 to 5:00 or by appointment. Call Jim Prehn at 825-2024 or Carol Ardis at 839-2004. The log cabin is listed with the Log Cabin Society of Michigan and is number 24. Our cabin will be 111 years old this year, and we will have Pioneer Days on Log Cabin Day, June 29, at the log cabin. Then on July 5, we'll have Pioneer Days in Jennings.
    The Historical Society welcomes new members. The cost is $5 per person each year, and you are welcome to attend their monthly meetings held on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at the Lake City Senior Center. Call Jim Prehn at 825-2024.
    The Lake City Kiwanis Club is offering 911 signs. The signs are highly reflective, have numbers on both sides, are assembled and installed for you, and make it easy for emergency vehicles to find your home. Total cost is just $25.
