Bay Area Senior Advocates (BASA) celebrates another success story!

Many agencies are driven to make improvements in order to gain recognition and awards, but how often do you hear of agencies that stumble across a “5-star rating from CMS/Medicare Nursing Home Compare” as well as a 5-star rating from “Best Michigan Nursing Homes”.  Bay Area Senior Advocates (BASA) is proud to recognize one of its members for such an honor,

John Kasben and his wife Donna, Owners and Operators since 1996 of Maple Valley Nursing Home, a 25 bed skilled licensed home in Maple City , Mi. had such an experience. “The rating from the Best Michigan Nursing Homes website means even more, since their rating start with the Nursing Home Compare ratings but go even further as far as reviews from residents and family members.  We didn’t even know they were out there.”  Without seeking “certifications”, the unassuming nursing facility in Leelanau County keeps up with the culture changes in nursing home care with it’s three pet cats and Lorikeet on site, as well as a dog that accompanies the afternoon shift nurse to work to keep residents company.  They boast a memorial garden, a pond donated by Waterscapes, Inc. in memory of previous residents Alberta and John Dorsey, and even a raised garden for one particular resident who has a green thumb, as their way of “being green.”

Criteria for the ratings from CMS/ Medicare are: Health Inspections, Nursing Home Staffing, Quality Measures, and Overall Rating.  Criteria for ratings from Best Michigan Nursing Homes (OurParents.com) are:  Staff Helpfulness, Cleanliness, Quality of Care and Overall Rating.
